Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s global portfolio of over 30 extraordinary hotel brands, has recently launched the Gatherings by Sheraton brand programme in Greater China. This debut is marked by an inspiring collaboration with The Genius Mum, a public welfare initiative by the China Women’s Development Foundation. Under the theme ‘Celebrate Life’s Moments at Sheraton’, nearly 400 pieces of intangible cultural heritage-inspired crafts are being showcased in the lobbies of nearly 100 Sheraton hotels across the country. This initiative invites guests and visitors to connect with the curated displays of Chinese culture.
Gatherings by Sheraton
In 2023, Sheraton Hotels introduced its Gatherings by Sheraton programme in the United States, aiming to inspire guests and locals through the stories and cultures of global communities. The initiative encourages travellers to enrich their experiences, renew perspectives, and embrace local narratives. Since its launch, Sheraton properties worldwide have hosted a variety of weekly experiences that celebrate these principles. Now, with the launch of ‘Celebrate Life’s Moments’ in Greater China, the hotel brand continues to uphold its vision of becoming ‘The World’s Gathering Place’.
“As the most global brand within Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio, Sheraton Hotels aspires to be ‘The World’s Gathering Place,’ inspiring each property to create unique spaces where guests from all corners of the globe can forge meaningful connections,” said Betty Tian, Vice President, Marketing, Communications, Premium & Select Brands, Greater China. “We are thrilled to collaborate with The Genius Mum initiative to transform the lobbies of Sheraton hotels across Greater China into showcases of Chinese culture, fostering deeper connections through craftsmanship and enriching our guests’ journeys.”
The collaboration with The Genius Mum under the theme ‘Celebrate Life’s Moments at Sheraton’ highlights cultural artwork from four key regions in China, each inspired by traditional symbols of blessings:
- Cloth Paste Paintings (Hebei Province): Originating from the art of the northern nomadic tribes, these modern interpretations of Manchu patchwork techniques use fabric, sponges, and needlework to convey joy and auspicious wishes through vibrant and intricate designs.
- Feng Xiang Dyeing (Guizhou Province): A cherished tradition of the Bouyei ethnic group, this dyeing art combines simple, dignified colour schemes with elegant patterns, symbolising good wishes and affection.
- Guangxi Zhuang Embroidery: Featuring vivid natural motifs such as dancing butterflies and auspicious lions, this embroidery showcases exquisite craftsmanship.
- Hubei Xilan Kapu: A vibrant brocade art from the Tujia ethnic group, this ancient technique weaves happiness and blessings into colourful designs.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Sheraton Hotels on The Genius Mum initiative, which empowers local craftswomen to preserve and showcase priceless cultural heritage through their skills and creativity,” said Nan Jing, Assistant Secretary-General of the China Women’s Development Foundation. “This partnership aligns with their commitment to being deeply rooted in local communities, offering travellers the chance to connect with Chinese heritage while supporting the livelihoods of talented craftswomen.”
The ‘Celebrate Life’s Moments’ exhibition, in collaboration with The Genius Mum, will run in the lobbies of nearly 100 hotels under the brand name across China until 31st March 2025. Guests can immerse themselves in the stories behind these captivating artworks and participate in interactive experiences to appreciate the artistry of intangible cultural heritage.
